Aug 6, 2017: Sun Triangle, New York City

In a plaza in front of the McGraw Hill Building on 6th Ave is a beautiful polished metal triangle. But this piece of art holds a scientific secret. It is a “sun triangle,” that is, each side points to the sun’s position at 12 noon on an astrologically significant day. Its longest side points to the sun on the Spring and Fall Equinox, the steepest and shortest side points to the the summer solstice and the bottom side to the winter solstice.

Thank you, Neil Degrasse Tyson for pointing this on one of your Star Talk podcasts.
