The octagonal shaped Panmure Island Lighthouse, built in 1853, is the oldest wooden lighthouse on Prince Edward Island (PEI), Canada.
The early lighthouses on PEI failed because they were made from the Island’s soft sandstone. They started building them out of wood from the forests. The wooden lighthouses were built by men skilled in shipbuilding. Panmure Island Lighthouse uses tree nails and bolts to make it strong.
The lighthouse has four levels that have various lighthouse items There’s a $5 admission to see those levels and go to the top. A lot of artifacts were lost and others were thrown in the sea when they were replaced by new equipment.
The view from the top is one of the best views I’ve ever seen. Beautiful, warm, clear days are rare on P.E.I. ,but when they occur, it’s one of the prettiest islands anywhere.
