The Transportation Safety Administration signed off last week on a new type of scanner that will allow travelers to pass through security without unpacking electronics and without being limited to 100 ml packages of liquids.
The CT (Computerized Tomography) scanners got a 6-month trial with American Airlines at Phoenix; a similar test was conducted at Luton Airport, near London, by British authorities.
The new scanners allow bags to go through with everything in place; it uses 3-D imaging techniques to give agents a clear picture of what’s inside. It’s not only convenient, it’s much faster than the present system.
While there is no national program to replace present systems, the TSA approval means that airlines and airports can now begin to install them.
