When I was stationed with the US Army in Darmstadt, Germany, just a few kilometers south of Frankfurt, we had many family and friends come to visit. One of the places on the must see list in Darmstadt city was the Hundertwasser Waldspirale (Forest Spiral) apartment building. This attraction never ceased to draw many ‘Ooohs’ and ‘Aaahs’, along with questions about the architecture. The grounds on the other side of the building are covered with trees, and although you can’t see it in my photo, the spiraling roof is covered in a forest of trees.
Friedensreich Hundertwasser (born Friedrich Stowasser in Austria) was an architect and artist who abhorred straight lines. He was the architect of many European buildings and I’ve visited two others, the Hundertwasser Haus Vienna and the KunstHaus Museum also in Vienna.
