Stockholm’s Tunnelbana metro stations are noted for their extensive and sometimes stunning art, with 90 of the 100 stations fully-decorated. Now, at its 60th anniversary, there’s an interactive viewer for stay-at-home enjoyment.
The gallery, sponsored by Expedia, includes dozens of views from 15 stations, five on each line. Each station has a different theme; one represents an underground garden, another shows scenes from a nearby palace destroyed 200 years ago, and one commemorates a 1971 conflict in which a citizen uprising stopped the city from cutting down trees to make way for traffic.
The first competition to decorate the Stockholm metro took place in 1956, when 21 artists were granted permission to install their work. There are now pieces by over 100 different artists in the stations.
