A Museum of Selfies is set to open next month in the Los Angeles area, dedicated to the “science, art and culture of self-representation,” which obviously includes artists’ self-portraits, but is clearly focused on the right-now phenomenon of selfies.
While selfies (of which an estimated 2.4 million are added to social media daily) may be with us a long time, the museum is a pop-up, slated to close in April. Despite its own mayfly-short life, it aims to look at what it calls a 40,000-year history of self-portraiture.
The museum will also have interactive installations, exploring a variety of themes with an ‘educational yet playful approach.’ There will even be special attention to the perhaps-TMI phenomena of the bathroom mirror selfie and the food selfie.
Oh, by the way: yes, selfie sticks are allowed. Admission is $25.
