The Smithsonian Air and Space Museum is about to get a multi-million dollar upgrade to its America by Air exhibit, one of its three main exhibition halls. If you’re planning a trip that includes it, better hurry: Starting this summer, the hall will close for three years for the project.
The upgrades and expansion are being financed in part by commercial airlines, with $28 million on hand from them. American, Delta and United are the lead donors, with additional support from Alaska, JetBlue, Frontier, Hawaiian and Spirit. Southwest has chipped in for an upgrade to the Welcome Center.
America by Air is stocked with aircraft, engines, models, uniforms and more. Among the larger exhibits are classic rides such as a DC3, a DC7, a Ford Tri-motor and the nose of a 747, and more.
