New tunnel could link Europe, Africa

It sounds blue-sky, er, blue-sea, but a plan to link Spain to Morocco by a 37-mile underwater tunnel complex could actually work, according to Swiss consultants and the world’s biggest tunnel-builder.

The plan, which both countries are apparently keen to build, would stretch south from a point in the Bay of Gibraltar. At a cost estimated at €8 billion, it would drastically cut freight time between the countries, and would also make possible transferring solar energy from the Sahara to Spain.

Previous studies had thrown cold water on the project, but the new reports from the University of Zurich and by the Herrenknecht building firm, have put it back on track, although funding still needs to be found. The planners expect some of  that would come as EU grants.
