Delayed rail passengers in Europe are in line for more compensation for delayed, cancelled or disrupted trains under a new rule approved by the European Parliament, to go into effect in 2020.
The current rules call for refund of 25% of the ticket price for delays between 30 minutes and two hours, 50% between two and three hours and 100% for delays over three hours. The new rules would set 75% after one-and-a-half hours, and the whole price after a two hour delay.
Some of Europe’s railroads may have issues with the changes; 1 in 10 French trains have been late recently. While many of the high-speed TGV lines make their schedule, the rules apply also to the regional TER lines.
