Lisbon doubles its per-night tourism charge

Lisbon’s ‘tourism tax,’ actually a €1 per night per person fee added to hotel and other lodging charges, will double in January.

The levy was originally put in place in 2016 to provide the city with some revenue from the growing number of visitors.

The increase was passed with a city commitment to put the additional funds into urban cleaning and into improving transport and city services in the most tourist-heavy areas of the city.
