Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, one of Europe’s busiest is in line to get a boost in accessibility, with an agreement to extend Amsterdam’s newest metro line to the airport’s main terminal.
The terminal is already sitting on top of a major mainline rail station with frequent service to the city’s center, but road access has gotten more and more difficult with traffic getting heavier.
The airport, which handled 71 million passengers last year, has another congestion problem as well. It’s limited by law, at least until 2020, to no more than 500,000 aircraft movements a year, and has already hit 499,446. A plan to divert short-haul traffic to a secondary airport has been blocked in court on legal and environmental grounds.
On the other hand, many analysts believe that traffic on some Schiphol routes to the UK will drop as direct high-speed train service between Amsterdam and London ramps up.
