The Rails to Trails Conservancy is getting ready to announce details of its planned coast-to-coast trail for hikers and bikers—a 4,000-mile lashup of new trails and existing trails running from Washington (DC) to Washington (State).
The May 8 announcement will detail the existing trails to be used, and the gaps to be filled with new construction. A bit more than half the distance is already in operation, mostly using abandoned railroad rights-of-way.
The plan is for the entire distance to be grade-separated from any motor vehicle traffic to make it a safe trip for all.
