Last round-up for towel animals at sea?

Those cute towel animals your cabin steward leaves on your bed at night may now be an endangered species.

Norwegian Cruise Line has announced that the cotton creations loved by many cruisers will disappear from some ships, and be limited on others. No list yet, though.

The company statement said “We are committed to being a responsible corporate citizen by fostering a culture of awareness and respect for our world’s resources. Our mission is to continually improve our sustainability culture through fresh innovation, progressive education and open collaboration.

“As such, from time to time, we explore opportunities to expand our efforts. In this instance, we are assessing the impact of reducing the number of towel animals we showcase aboard a few of our ships. We understand that many of our guests enjoy them as part of the experience of cruising with us, so towel animals remain available upon request.”

Cruise Critic’s message boards have been carrying varying opinions by cruisers, some of whom are predictably upset, while others have pointed out that at two towels per animal, a 1000-cabin ship would be using two thousand extra towels. Others raised the possibility that other cruise lines will follow.
