Just when you thought that all the good museum ideas had been taken, along comes another unique idea: New York will be seeing lots of cosmetic history soon with the May opening of The Makeup Museum.
Doreen Bloch, the new museum’s executive director, told press that it’s the first-ever physical space open to the public and focused on the history of beauty and its impact. There may be challenges to that, but it’s certainly the first in New York, and plans to take a long view. Bloch points out that “makeup has a 10,000 year history.”
But the first big exhibit won’t go that far back; it’s “Pink Jungle: 1950s Makeup in America,” and will focus on that era and the personalities who made the looks and wore the products.
