Japan rail pass soon available online

The Japan Rail Pass, which allows almost all-you-can-eat rail travel, will now be available online to visitors planning a trip to Japan. It’s offered by Japan Railways Group (JR) the largest rail operator in Japan and will be on sale in time for Summer Olympics visitors.

Previously, the pass, which is only available to visitors from abroad, had to either be purchased through an authorized travel agency or airline, or at a few rail stations, but at a 10% higher price.

The passes will sell for $300, $475 or $600 for 7, 14 or 21 days for adults, with lower prices for youths. The reservation site, Japan Rail Pass Reservation, will go live on June 1. Passes themselves will need to be retrieved at a rail station or airport; their validity starts when they are picked up and used.
