Sweden is taking a unique action to reduce exposure to the COVID-19 virus: It is telling 80% of its parliament to stay home and leave the work to a skeleton crew.
Like many other countries, Sweden has closed schools, encouraged working from home and restricted international travel, but it’s so far the only country to streamline its legislature.
Starting yesterday, the Riksdag will act with 55 members spread about the seats normally used by 349 members. The 55 seats have been assigned proportionally among the eight parties represented in the body. Non-voting members will work elsewhere, and still represent constituents.
