Switzerland’s unique Bread Post, a collaboration between the Swiss Post Office and independent local bakeries, is rising like yeast dough as the Covid-19 crisis has quadrupled demand.
The service, which has been operating for just over a year, lets customers order fresh bread delivered up to five times a week. It’s collected from local bakeries by the postal system and delivered with the mail.
Its original purpose was to give local bakeries a boost in competition with national chains, but the virus crisis has given it new purpose and importance. So far, it is only available in German-speaking areas of the country, but Swiss Post expects to expand it to French-speaking western areas this month, and to Italian-speaking Ticino later.
