Mixed messages for U.K. travel

In a wave of news bits that might resemble a Boulting Brothers comedy if the implications weren’t so serious, UK travelers are being told they can buy mid-May vacation packages to sunny resorts in Europe at the same time they’re being warned against any non-essential travel.

To make things even more flibbertigibbet, Britain’s biggest holiday firm, Tui, is selling those May 15 packages to Spain, which has banned foreign visitors, leaving from a terminal in Manchester which has been shut down. and heading to a Spanish town with no open hotels or rentals.

And, on return, Brits are now being told, anyone entering the UK will be told to self-isolate on arrival. Some vacation!

It appears that Tui is anxious to get cash flowing again, and is betting on restrictions being lifted by then—but with so many sets of authorities involved, that doesn’t seem likely. And they are not the only ones: Virgin Holidays is offering packages starting May 11 to New York, Florida and California. Perhaps New York’s stay-inside-wear-a-mask-no-restaurant policy will make them feel right at home.
