Gold-Plated 1981 DeLorean

Any DeLorean is classic and collectible, but this particular car is very rare and expensive.  It’s plated in 24 karat gold (only one of two made), worth $85,000 when new — now obviously worth a lot more.

The gold-plated DeLoreans were made for the American Express Gold Card Christmas catalogue and were not intended to be a practical purchase.  Insurance rates were $1,000 a month.  It’s said a ding in the door cost $24,000 to fix.

The car sits at the entry to the National Automobile Museum in Reno.
