Our family pets are our rocks – they cheer us up, keep us company, and make us feel like the most important person in the world. So why wouldn’t we want to take them on holiday with us? Pet-friendly holidays and trips are on the rise, and the UK is the perfect place for this as the travel distance is shorter and your dog doesn’t need to go through the stress of overseas transport!
So, if you’re thinking about travelling around the UK with your pet then have a look at our 10-point checklist of things to consider.
1) Is your accommodation pet-friendly?
This is obviously one of the most important parts of the checklist – check that your accommodation is pet-friendly, and what the rules are. For instance, some holiday rentals will only allow one dog, so if you’re travelling with two it’s worth double-checking.
2) Is there enough around you for your furry friends to enjoy?
Is there a large garden, places to go for walks or even dog friendly beaches nearby? Make sure your pet is well catered for!
3) Have you factored in some breaks if you’re driving a long-distance?
You should be doing this for both yourself and your dog, so you can both stretch your legs and break up the journey.
4) Locate the nearest vet office to your accommodation
Just in case you have any emergencies (and make sure your insurance is up to date!).
5) Is your dog microchipped?
In the unlikely event that your dog may run away, you need to be safe in the knowledge you can track them down.
6) Can your dog cope with travelling in the car/by train?
Whatever your mode of transport as you’re travelling around the UK with your pet, do they get anxious or stressed when travelling this way? Reconsider how they will feel on this journey, or purchase some natural anti-anxiety remedies to help keep them relaxed.
7) Make sure the company you’re travelling with (if not by car) allows dog travel, and what their rules are.
8) Pack some home comforts
Unfamiliar surroundings can sometimes make pets feel nervous, so make sure to pack their favourite blanket, dog bed or something else that will make them feel connected to home.
9) Pack treats, food and toys

10) Make sure vaccinations are up to date (some pet-friendly hotels require this).
