Well, maybe not really surprised, if you’ve been following along for the past few years, you might already know that Germany is neither the champ at drinking beer, nor exporting it. In fact, it’s #4 on both counts.
For the 21st year in a row, the Netherlands is Europe’s top beer exporter, followed by Belgium, then Germany and France. But Germany’s #3 in Europe is only #4 worldwide, because as much as the Dutch ship—with the U.S. and Canada, France and Britain as its best customers—the word champion is Mexico, which ships twice as much as the Dutch.
As for drinking the beer, the Dutch are not even on the chart. The top countries in per capita beer drinking are the Czech Republic (188.6 litres per capita) followed by Austria, Romania, Germany, Poland and Namibia. Prosit!
