Germany’s Autobahns, its equivalent of freeways, are known for having no posted speed limit, a tradition so strong that it became a pledge for all parties involved in the current German governing coalition.
But there may, in fact, be a limit. A Czech driver who blew 417kmh in a Bugatti and posted videos of his run to social media has been referred to prosecutors by highway police in the northern state of Saxony.
Racing on the Autobahn is illegal, and police claim that even though only one car was involved it’s a race if the driver “advances at an inappropriate speed and in a manner that grossly violates the traffic code and is reckless.”
Radim Passer, the driver, shrugged it all off in his blog, saying “We thank God for the safety and good circumstances.” Meanwhile, his story has led to new calls for a speed limit, and some recent polling has indicated that perhaps a majority of Germans now feel there should be a limit.
