Amtrak restores another historic route

Amtrak, the U.S. national passenger rail service, has big plans for expansion and high speed routes, but it is also picking up some of the smaller pieces that long ago lost regular passenger service.

The latest is Burlington, Vermont, which will see a direct rail link to New York City restored for the first time in nearly 70 years on July 29, when the Ethan Allen Express re-opens the section between Rutland, Vermont and the historic Burlington Union Station, a landmark on the Lake Champlain waterfront.

Daily service will leave Burlington at 10:10 am and arrive at New York’s Penn Station at 5:45 pm, in time for dinner, as Burlington’s Mayor Miro Weinberger points out. The return trip leaves the next day at 2:21 pm and arrives in Burlington just before 10 pm.

Other historic services added in recent months include summer service between New York City and the Berkshires, a popular vacation destination in Massachusetts.
