A few months back my wife and I spent a half week visiting the capital of Montana. A great tip lead us to Steve’s Cafe, where we enjoyed all of our breakfasts while in town.
Like most great breakfast spots, Steve’s is only open for breakfast and lunch. It’s packed with locals, always a good sign. The menu is broad — omelets, scrambles, burritos, benedicts, with homemade corn beef hash and sausages. It being Montana, huckleberry items are prominent and delicious.

A unique item is their huckleberry stuffed French toast. The toast is stuffed with a blend of huckleberries, ricotta and cream cheeses. It’s as good as it looks and likely is the most popular item on the menu.

Steve’s Café is a family founded, owned and operated business. It has been the consistent winner of Helena’s ‘Best Breakfast’ since opening.
We had an excellent experience at Steve’s. The food was great, the service superb, and the coffee (locally roasted) was delicious.
They lost my business over a $3.25 gift card. Sad. I bought a $30 gift card back in 2020 to help them stay in business during the shut down, only to find that they changed owners and no longer accept my gift card. I tried to redeem twice and the first time I was told by a female manager that she was able to find the original gift card purchase and that they would honor it. I came back a few months later then I was denied again. No empathy at all. Just the corporate line and shoved me out the door without as little as a discount to make up for the headache. Well, they lost my business for good.
