While we were driving from Anchorage to Denali National Park on the Glenn Highway, we got caught up in a traffic jam — a bit of a surprise to us as we did not expect this in remote Alaska.
As we crawled forward, we could see smoke in the distance. A wildfire had destroyed a portion of forest, including several homes and vehicles.
The fire was still burning as we pass by, although to us it didn’t seem too bad. But the fire department closed the highway for several hours not long after we passed through as the wind picked up and the fire was beginning to spread more quickly. We were happy not to have been further delayed, and went on to enjoy beautiful scenery and wildlife.
I always appreciate the fire fighters who risk injury in dealing with these unpredictable forces of nature.
