Exploring Flam, Norway

We sailed into picturesque Flam, Norway, at the innermost banks of the Aurlandsfjord. This little village is the starting point for the Flam Railway, hiking, biking, boating, kayaking, and, as I would explore, bus tours to discover the beauty of the river surrounded by fjords, waterfalls, high mountains, and deep valleys.

I am cruising with Viking Ocean Cruises. Before my scenic bus trip, I explore the village. Several gift shops are available to pass the time, along with a small but informative museum highlighting the area’s history.

On the bus tour, we make our way up a steep incline to Stegastein viewpoint, more than 2,000 feet above the Aurlandsfjord. The view is part of the spectacular National Scenic Route from Aurland to Laerdal. We have plenty of time to take in the scenery before heading back down the mountain.

On the way back to Flam, we stop at a beautiful 13th-century church.

Vangen Church is located in Aurlandsvangen. Constructed in 1202, it features stone walls four to five-foot thick. The ceiling reaches 59 feet high. The church is decorated with painted tulips, brass ornaments, and support columns in green, yellow, and red against a pale-yellow background.

Back on the bus, we return to Viking Jupiter and sail along the fjords on our way to the next port.

I appreciate the not-as-common ports-of-call. Getting to know the smaller communities and all they offer was a charming way to explore Norway.
