A small burrowing owl recently spent two weeks aboard one of the world’s largest cruise ships, Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas before being captured by Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission agents, who boarded the ship at Miami.
The agents reported that the stowaway “had nothing to claim in customs.”
The owl appeared to be in good health, but was taken to a wildlife center as a precaution because “With a diet consisting of mostly insects and sometimes small reptiles, birds, frogs, and rodents, the cruise ship was not an ideal or safe long-term habitat,” Florida Fish and Wildlife concluded.
During the cruise, passengers were amused by the owl’s comings and goings, resting on railings and appearing through plants. The exit signs were apparently a favorite perch.
