Avelo Airlines, a startup low-cost carrier, appears to have found a real market niche with flights from Wilmington, Delaware to mostly leisure destinations, and is adding more routes there, including one to San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The carrier began flying out of Wilmington in February with only a few routes, but has added enough to now serve 15 non-stop destinations by November. Since February, it has carried 125,000 passengers from Wilmington, which it says is the fastest airport passenger growth rate in history.
Avelo has no competition at Wilmington, which had not had any scheduled carriers for several years when Avelo moved in, but faces strong competition from airlines serving Philadelphia, a short drive away. When flights started, Avelo said it was confident that the Delaware location and low prices would be a successful match, and it appears they were right.
