Our trip between Reno and Las Vegas took us through the old mining town of Tonopah. Situated just off the highway was this place, the Clown Motel. I stopped to take a few photos because it seemed to be such an odd name and theme for a motel.
There are some people who are fond of clowns, though most I know don’t like them. Stephen King penned a clown’s face to the evil in his book, “It”. I recently heard the comment: “The face of the devil is a jester”. So there’s a creepy quality to clowns that would make me not want to stay in a motel like this.
A little research revealed the following: The Clown Motel was founded by two local residents in 1985, who displayed all 150 clowns in their father’s collection in the hotel. (Their father rests in the town’s cemetery, which is situated beside motel). The motel gained popularity and became successful.
In 2015 an episode of ‘Ghost Adventures’ was filmed at the Clown Motel, which was thought to show “supernatural” features in it. That same year writer Christopher Sebela stayed at the motel for a month, to experience the supernatural, and wrote a graphic novel about his experiences.
