Airport loyalty programs growing

Frequent flier loyalty programs are a staple of the airline industry, ever since American Airlines invented the first one in 1981. Now the idea appears to be spreading to airports and the shops and services they host.

A company called Thanks Again that manages a number of airport rewards programs says it’s the largest network of airport programs in the U.S., and just signed up Denver as its latest program. The company already operates airport-wide programs in Atlanta, Boston, Manchester, NH and Greenville, SC.

Thanks Again also operates in another 125 or so airports through partnerships with restaurants, parking operators and other concessions who issue Thanks Again points, which can be redeemed at any participating airport or operator. Redemptions can either be for parking, merchandise, food or cash back via gift cards and even airline miles. Points are earned at 1c per dollar of spend

The company is looking in other directions, too: Airlines. It has just signed up its first airline partner, JetBlue. In that deal, JetBlue credit card holders can earn 3 TrueBlue points per dollar.
