Dutch rail operator NS is moving with new times in its new schedule that takes effect Monday by cutting service on Fridays and adding 1,800 more trains a week, mostly to its Monday to Thursday schedules.
“Tuesdays and Thursdays have become typical commuter days,” the state-owned company said, explaining its decision to run more trains at the start of the week. “That requires a different timetable from what we had before.”
Despite its recognition that the workweek has changed in the post-pandemic and working-remote era, there’s still a big demand for weekend service, both for locals and visitors. Service is being added on routes with highest demand, including those that serve Schiphol Airport.
Other changes include restoring routes that were canceled in the past few years and cutting travel time on its international train to Berlin to under six hours.
