Where ‘The Crown’ was shot, visitors follow

This is the final year for the TV series ‘The Crown,’ which focuses on the lives, real or semi-real, of the British royal family, and fans of the family and of film are likely to be making treks to the scenes where it’s been filmed.

That’s a common trend these days, with entire tourism industries being built or rebuilt after popular films or series. New Zealand is still getting hordes of Hobbit fans, Northern Ireland promotes its Game of Thrones settings and any number of English sites have their Harry Potter scenes.

So, with the help of the Telegraph (UK), here’s a list for The Crown fans:

  • St George’s Chapel, Windsor is played by the historic York Minster, one of England’s most important Gothic churches.
  • The Queen’s favorite residence, Balmoral, has a stand-in at Ardverikie House, also in Scotland. It’s a screen veteran, having previously played Glenbogle Manor in Monarch of the Glen.
  • West Wycombe Park, a National Trust property in Buckinghamshire, does double duties, with its rooms used for a variety of interior shots and a big role as Villa Windsor, home of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor in Paris.
  • Basildon Park, in Berkshire, is the stand-in for the Windsor Castle Royal Lodge, home to Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson
  • Phoenix Arts Club in London is used for scenes at the Ritz Hotel in Paris, which played a key role on the day of Diana’s death

One important location that got to play itself: St Andrews University, where William and Kate attended, is where most of the scenes involving it were shot.
