The little town of Húsavík is situated on Iceland’s northern coast, less than 60km from the Arctic Circle. It has in recent years become a popular departure point for whale watching tours. The ‘Náttfari’ in the photo above is a traditional herring boat which is now used to take tourists on whale watching trips in the bay.
The photo below shows a view of Húsavík’s harbour.
Several traditional wooden sailing boats are moored there. Some had been engaged in whale hunting before being repurposed for tourist trips.
I get sea-sick very easily, so whale watching off a boat is not something I would ever contemplate. Instead we opted for a front-row table at the harbour cafe and sat there enjoying the lovely sunshine, whilst watching the comings and goings in the harbour.
The final photo shows a view across the bay, just north of the town. The scenery around there is truly spectacular.
Lovely photos! I would love to visit #Iceland!
Great photos, Professor! The town also has an excellent whale museum which is worth a visit.
We were travelling along the coast at that point and unfortunately didn’t have time to explore the town thoroughly.
