Austria is an ideal country for nature tourism enthusiasts. The trails here offer diverse terrain, picturesque views, and well-marked routes. The paths are varied; you can choose between a short walk in the valley or a challenging mountain hike.
There are a total of six national parks here. The largest is Hohe Tauern National Park, which covers an area of over 1,800 km² (695 mi2). Conversely, Thayatal National Park, with an area of 13 km² (5 mi2), is the smallest national park in Austria.
1. Hohe Tauern National Park
In addition to being the largest national park in Austria, Hohe Tauern National Park is also the largest in Central Europe. It spans across three federal states: Salzburg, Tyrol, and Carinthia. The landscape of this Austrian national park is primarily characterized by extensive glaciers, waterfalls, mountain streams, and tranquil alpine lakes, of which there are more than 550.
What to see in Hohe Tauern National Park?
You definitely shouldn’t miss the Krimml Waterfalls—one of the most stunning natural attractions in Austria and the largest waterfalls in Europe. Their height is approximately 380 meters (1,250 ft). A well-marked hiking trail leads to the waterfalls, which are about 4 km (2.5 mi) long and not too challenging.
Are you a passionate climber? Head for the mountain peak of Kitzsteinerhorn, which stands at 3203 meters (10,508 ft) above sea level. At the summit, you can enjoy panoramic views of the glacial landscape.
2. Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park
Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park is located in eastern Austria. The landscape is characterized by its vast steppe areas and wetlands. As a result, this national park is an ideal place for birdwatching, hosting around 150 species of birds.
Where to go in Neusiedler See-Seewinkel National Park?
If you prefer cycling over hiking, take a trip around Lake Neusiedl, which is the largest lake in Austria. There is a cycling path of approximately 130 km that offers beautiful views of the lake.
3. Danube-Auen National Park
Danube-Auen National Park is located along the lower reaches of the Danube River, between Vienna and Bratislava. The name “Danube-Auen” means floodplain forests, as floodplain forests cover 65% of the park’s area. The remaining 35% consists of wetlands and water bodies.
What to do in Danube-Auen National Park?
If you want to explore not only the natural landscape in Austria but also a bit of history, you can visit Orth Castle. Orth Castle serves not only as an information center for Danube-Auen National Park but also provides more insight into its history.
4. Kalkalpen National Park
Kalkalpen National Park is characterized by its dramatic limestone mountains. In addition to mountain peaks, the park also features forests, waterfalls, and picturesque valleys. This makes it an ideal location for hiking trips in Austria.
Which trails to try in Kalkalpen National Park?
You can set out on the “From Alm to Alm” loop, which is 5 km (3.1 mi) long and passes through mountain pastures. Another option is the 7 km (4.3 mi) loop that takes you over the peaks of Kamper Wall and Schwarzkogel. For a longer hike, head to the summit of Hoher Nock via Budergrabensteig from Rettenbach. The entire route is just over 14 km (8.7 mi), with an elevation gain of nearly 1,400 meters (4,600 ft).
5. Gesäuse National Park
Gesäuse National Park is located in central Austria and is the youngest of all Austrian national parks (established in 2002). It includes part of the Gesäuse mountain range, characterized by steep slopes and towering mountain peaks.
What to do in Gesäuse National Park?
The park is an ideal destination not only for nature hiking enthusiasts but also for climbers. Due to its rugged landscape and terrain, it offers a variety of climbing routes suitable for both beginners and advanced climbers.
6. Thayatal National Park
Thayatal National Park is located on the border between Austria and the Czech Republic. Like Gesäuse National Park, it is characterized by its steep slopes and deep valleys.
What not to miss in Thayatal National Park?
Visit Hardegg Castle, situated on the edge of the park. From the castle, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
