Britain’s Royal Mail has raised the cost of sending a letter—or a Christmas card—to £1.65, and a reporter for the Telegraph newspaper has figured out that for some people, it would be cheaper to fly abroad, mail the cards and come home.
Of course, the calculation is based on someone with a Christmas card list of 100 names, perhaps not common for most families, but certainly likely for numbers of small to large businesses. The Telegraph and search tool Skyscanner found six European locations where the combination of a cheap round-trip airfare and postage back to Britain would cost less than the £165 cost of domestic mail.
A £27 roundtrip fare to Tirana, Albania, for instance, combined with £85 worth of postage, came out to £112. Skyscanner also found a £33 round-trip to Belgrade; postage would cost £78. Other locations where the trick would work included Sofia, Bulgaria; Faro, Portugal; Memmingen, Germany and Milan. Of course, you’d have to spend some time seeking out the best fares, but…
