Guard Change, Gyeongbokgung Palace, Seoul

Seoul, Republic of Korea: An event not to be missed when in this vibrant city is the changing of the royal guard at Gyeongbokgung Palace. It occurs twice a day at 10am and 2pm, except Tuesdays when Gyeongbokgung is closed.

The ceremony re-enacts the custom of the royal court during the Joseon dynasty (1392–1910) to ensure the security of the king and his court. The guards wear traditional costumes and carry Joseon-era weapons, based on historical records. The ceremony includes the beating of a huge drum that can be seen in the title picture.

Gyeongbokgung Palace was built in 1395 as the official palace of the Joseon dynasty. It is located in the north of the city and is the largest and arguably the most beautiful of Seoul’s five palaces.
