Google has taken a next step toward storing the ultimate U.S. ID — your passport — on your phone with a beta test allowing users who sign up as testers to create a Google Wallet ID with the passport.
Announced in September, the beta is now rolling out, with a “create an ID pass with your US passport” added to the Add to Wallet function. The process involves scanning the security chip on the back of the passport and taking a selfie to verify identity. To sign up as a tester, you can use this link.
Once installed in Google Wallet, the digital passport can be used as identification with TSA at an increasing number of U.S. airports, including some of the largest, but so far only for domestic flights. An iPhone version is likely to follow at some point.
