Colombia to allow flights over inaccessible park

Colombia’s largest and most biodiverse national park is off limits to visitors, and until recently even flyovers of the vast area were prohibited. But now, the government has licensed a number of operators to fly tourists above the vast park.

The Chiribiquete National Park is home to several uncontacted indigenous tribes, and concern for them is part of the reason for restricting overflights. The area’s different zones include rain forest, savannah and table-topped mountains. Since last year, it’s been listed as a Unesco World Heritage.

The new permitted flyovers, with 19 companies authorized for limited numbers, are made by small plane from Bogota, and are combined with informative talks about the area.
