At the Market in Eymoutiers
This is a brief story about friends with whom I stayed at their home in France. Also in Amsterdam, but this is about visiting Gary and Berthe in France.
Gary Goldschneider was a concert pianist, composer and writer who also had studied medicine at Yale before turning to music professionally. In the ‘80s Gary moved from California to Amsterdam where he met his wife, Berthe Meijer, a well-known food writer for the Amsterdam newspaper, NRC Handelsblad. Gary wrote a popular series of books on astrology and with the proceeds bought a house in France.
Their house was in a hamlet not far from the provincial town of Eymoutiers, east of Limoges. The day after I arrived a musician friend of Gary’s also came to stay with his wife. In preparation for our dinner that night Berthe and Gary with me in tow went shopping at the market in Eymoutiers. That evening Berthe’s wonderful dinner was served on the terrace and afterward we 3 women were given a private concert.
Here’s a fun NY Times story about Gary.
