My brother and I spotted this raven when we were driving through Banff National Park. The ground was covered in snow, and it looks like the middle of winter, but the photo was actually taken in mid-May. Summer comes late in the high country of the Canadian Rockies.
This raven was a professional mooch. He was hanging out in a parking pullout, trying to convince each car that came near that he needed something to eat. Feeding wild animals is not allowed in Canada’s National Parks, but people often ignore the rules. Ravens are tough birds who can survive year-round in this harsh environment.
The raven sits on a rock in front of frozen Bow Lake, one of the prettiest lakes in the summer.
Lovely photograph!
It’s not just ravens at Bow Lake. Here is another inquisitive visitor on my car door – a Clarke’s nutcracker last May. Dr. Fumblefinger is correct that Summer comes late in the high country of the Canadian Rockies; Bow Lake still had ice on it in mid-June.
