American Airlines is coming to Delaware's Wilmington Airport, but its bringing buses instead of planes, extending its 'Landline' service to and from its hub at Philadelphia International Airport with six daily round trips.
The service, which American, United and Sun Country use on a number of routes, uses customized buses to extend their networks to smaller cities. Passengers check-in, including baggage, at smaller airports for a journey to a major hub where they arrive 'airside' without another security check.
American's buses, operated by Landline, also serve Lehigh Valley, Atlantic City and will extend soon to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Wilmington Airport, which until recently had no scheduled air service, but in the last year it has become a hub for newcomer Avelo Airlines, with flights mostly to leisure destinations.
