Acadia National Park fights traffic jams

Maine's Acadia National Park is planning to make some park roads reservation-only at key popular times as a way of overcoming traffic jams on some of the park's roads and attractions.

The system will be tested starting in October, and will take effect in summer 2021. It may include not only the reservation system but extra fees for driving to some of the top spots, while keeping them free for cyclists and hikers.

The reservations will initially apply to the park's Ocean Drive and Jordan Pond areas from 7 am to 5 pm; for another key area, Cadillac Mountain, the hours will be different, because the rush hour there takes place early in the morning, since the mountain is the first place in the U.S. from which the sunrise can be seen.
