Qantas squeezed past regional rival and last-year winner Air New Zealand to return to its frequent position as world's safest airline in new rankings by AirlineRatings.com.
The ratings organization's head, Geoffrey Thomas, pointed out that being number one is not a wide distinction, saying "The safety margins between these top 20 airlines are very small, they are all outstanding airlines." While the group does not call out airlines as 'unsafe,' the bottom of the list of 384 includes Nepal Airlines (Nepal), Airblue (Pakistan), Sriwijaya Air (Indonesia), Blue Wing (Suriname), Pakistan International Airlines and Air Algerie (Algeria).
In an interesting twist, Delta is the only one of the 20 safest airlines that is also among the most punctual. That list tops off with Brazil's Azul Airlines, followed by ANA, JAL, LATAM Airlines and Delta.
