America’s Cup racing sails into Barcelona

The America’s Cup sailing competition is headed for Barcelona for its 37th edition. The races will run from August 22 through October 20th.

Winner of the races, held every few years since 1851, holds the cup itself, the oldest trophy in sports, until the following set of races. Until 1983, it was always won by a yacht representing the New York Yacht Club, when Australia won. Since then it has been held by teams from the U.S., Switzerland and New Zealand, the current holder.

A wide variety of teams will compete this year, representing New Zealand, the UK, Switzerland, Italy, the U.S., France, Canada, Germany, Sweden and Australia.

The events are expected to draw around 2.5 million tourists and could bring more than €1 billion to the host city.
