Amsterdam, which seems to generate an endless stream of stories about its attempts to fight overtourism, reclaim its central area for locals, reduce cruise port calls and create calmer streets now has given itself a new worry: flower pots.
The local council for the city’s Centrum borough says it’s trying to prevent “messiness” with its new rules—30 of them—for residents who like to decorate their doorways with flowering plants.
Among the rules: no more than two pots per person, size restrictions on pots, only sustainable materials and no poisonous or prickly plants allowed. In addition, climbing roses, wisteria and creepers are banned unless everyone living in the building agrees. A few selected streets will have a complete ban on plants.
