Amtrak, the U.S. national rail carrier, is flattening its fare structure, from three categories to two, and making some changes in how tickets can be refunded or changed.
Under the new plan, which will apply nationwide except to sleeping-car trains, there will only be Flex and Value fares, with the higher-priced Flex fares fully cancelable, with the price returned to the original form of payment, while Value fares can be canceled, but will only get a 75% refund, in effect a 25% cancelation fee.
The previous Saver fares will no longer be available, replaced by Value. Special promotions such as Night Owl fares in the Northeast Corridor. In addition, refunds from Value fares will now go to original form of payment rather than being issued as electronic vouchers.
