Amtrak ups its order for new trains

Amtrak's business is picking up these days—enough that it's just bumped up its order for new trains to replace and increase its aging fleet.  The added order, for 10 trains, brings the total up to 83. They will operate on Amtrak's eastern lines, including the Northeast Corridor.

The new cars, dubbed Airo, are expected to debut in 2026. Amtrak's president, Roger Harris, gave the railroad a little pat on its own back, saying "We're thrilled to satisfy the soaring demand for train travel with new state-of-the-art, American-made equipment that ensures the highest standards of comfort, service and amenities. These new trainsets will help us get people where they need to go, while reducing road and air congestion, creating jobs and supporting the American economy."

Among the features of the new rolling stock are more leg and arm room, adjustable headrests and power and USB ports at each seat, along with tablet holders and adjustable cupholders. Enhanced WiFi and signage on board are also part of the deal. The cars are being built in California by Siemens. Support for the expansion comes from federal infrastructure and recovery bills passed last year.

The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations
