The world never seems to tire of pizza-making records, and Italians in particular get upset when another country claims a pizza honor, whether it's for the longest, the biggest or the most.
So it should be no surprise that when a Singapore restaurant claimed a record at 3574 pizzas, and were trumped by a Swiss restaurant at 5070 in 12 hours, a team from Italy responded, and set a new record of 5836 pies in 12 hours.
The record-setting effort, involving 43 chefs and a host of spectators/eaters, took place as the finale of a 3-day pizza-themed weekend in Martina Franca, a small town in Puglia in southern Italy. They beat the record in just under 10.5 hours, and went on to bake 766 more for insurance.
And those are only the qualifying pizzas. 450 were disqualified; judges measured to ensure that each pie was at least 31cm in diameter and contained all the required ingredients.
