Surfing was invented on the Hawaiian islands and the tradition continues. Probably the most popular place to surf is on Waikiki Beach, where rather tame and predictable waves provide hours of fun for the teenagers and adults of Honolulu. For serious waves, there's nothing like North Shore in Oahu.
I've never seen the giant waves that can roll in to the North Shore, but surfing is as much a part of the culture here as are beautiful Hawaiian sunsets. You'll find lots of shops that sell surfboards, swim suits and related surfing gear.
