We are greeted for our morning excursion by a local guide dressed in Lederhosen and a big smile. We follow him from the ship docked on the Danube River into Linz and its old town.
The Main Square is dominated by Trinity Column, a 65-foot-high Baroque sculpture completed in 1723. Carved in white marble by Sebastian Stumpfegger, it is dedicated to the Holy Trinity by the guilds, the Emperor and the people of Linz in gratitude for deliverance from war, fire and plague suffered in the early 1700s.
We wander along cobblestone streets. Our guide points out interesting features and takes us into courtyards, and past beautiful building facades and the city’s New Cathedral dating to 1862.
Later on during our exploration we are able to walk inside the city’s Old Cathedral for a better look at its interior beauty. The cathedral was built between 1669 and 1678. The single-nave Baroque church features a marble high altar, ornate carvings and gold trim.
All too soon our tour ends and we head back to AmaStella for lunch before heading out on another adventure in historic Austria.
